Today I am reviewing the industry standard condenser microphone, the Audio Technica AT2035. I need to note that this an XLR condenser microphone which means it requires phantom power to work properly. Therefore, if you are looking at this microphone, make sure that your audio interface / mixer provides phantom power.

The construction on the microphone, just like the other AT20 series mics, is excellent. It has an all metal construction; a metal body, a metal windscreen, and some substantial weight to it. On the back of the microphone there are two switches to help get the best sound out of this microphone. The first switch is a -10db which will make your signal quieter in case you are micing any loud sound sources (guitar amp, drums, etc.) There is also a switch with a bass roll off around 80Hz to help with overly boomy sounds or other pesky low frequency noises.
The frequency response on this microphone is 20Hz - 20kHz. When testing it on the voice I thought it provided a very full and clear tone. The acoustic guitar also sounded full with a nice amount of high end to help liven up the sound. Lastly, the electric guitar was excellent and provided a very accurate representation of the guitar amps sound.
We also see a cardioid polar pattern when we look at the specs sheet. When we tested it out by spinning the microphone around, we picked up the majority of sound directly in front of the mic. When we got around to the back of the microphone we lose the majority of the sound. When I was typing on a keyboard behind the microphone you could still hear the keyboard but it was very quiet.
Honestly, this is just a great mic! If you get this, I am almost certain that it will be a workhorse in your studio. It has an excellent build quality, excellent sound, and it seems to perform well in every situation I put it in. If you're a podcaster, this is a great mic because it is directional and provides great tone on your voice. If you're a gamer, the polar pattern seems narrow enough to eliminate the majority of background noise while focusing on your voice. If you're an audio engineer; it just sounds good.

On episode 28 of the BSP, the audio quality is not at the usual standard, but I didn’t want to miss another episode. I received a question that from viewer HighlyFictional that I thought was important to answer; "how do you deal with youtube hate?”.
I also share my ideas (with help from veritiasium) why I think internet conversations typically devolve into nothing more than screaming matches. I shortly cover some small news stories and then answer a few more listener questions.
Lastly, I briefly discuss what inspired me to begin creating youtube videos and ultimately what inspired me to begin making microphone review videos.

Today I am reviewing MXL 991 XLR Condenser Microphone. This is part 2 of 2 of the MXL 990/991 Recording Kit review series. This is the smaller of the two microphones in the kit, and it is an instrument microphone (not designed for vocals). It is also a condenser microphone, which means it will require phantom power to work properly, so keep that in mind when you are considering this recording kit.

The build of this microphone feels a little bit weaker than the MXL990. It has an all metal construction and an all small metal grill. It does not have much weight to it which I think would make this a great overhead microphone, but I would be careful with the mic.
The frequency response of this mic is listed as 30Hz - 18kHz which is a decent range. It sounded relatively nice on vocals (even though it's not designed for this) and electric guitar. When I tested it on the acoustic, it sounded full and warm as well. I think that this microphone has slightly better bass response than the 991. I think that micing your fretboard with this and the soundhole with the 990 would provide a very rich and full acoustic tone.
The microphone also offers a cardioid polar pattern. This means it picks up audio directly in front of the microphone and picks up little to no audio around the sides or back of the mic. It seems to be a narrow pick up range, which helps eliminate a lot of the unwanted keyboard noise in the background.
All around, I think that this mic pack is a great beginner set. It will provide you two microphones so you can play with micing techniques and positions. The 991 itself sounds nice on the two instruments I tested it out on and I think it would work well as a room mic or as an overhead drum mic. I would steer clear of using this as a designated vocal mic as it was not designed for that, but if you do decide to use it as a vocal mic, I implore you to use a windscreen/pop filter.

The build of this microphone feels pretty nice. It has an all metal construction and an all metal grill. It has some substantial weight to it too. It feels all around like a well built sturdy microphone. It doesn't feel like it's as high quality as an AT2035, but keep in mind that this microphone is between $50-$60 (if you buy the kit).
The frequency response of this mic is listed as 30Hz - 20kHz which is a very nice range. It sounded relatively nice on vocals and electric guitar, but when I tested it on the acoustic it sounded a little bit thin. This could have been easily remedied by altering the microphones position. Regardless of the mic positions, it does seem to lack a little bit in the low end.
The microphone also offers a cardioid polar pattern. This means it picks up audio directly in front of the microphone and picks up little to no audio around the sides or back of the mic. It seems to be a narrow pick up range, which helps eliminate a lot of the unwanted keyboard noise in the background.
All around I think this is a nice sounding microphone for the price. It sounded nice on the vocals and the electric guitar, but did seem to lack a little in the low end. I think this would be a great option for gamers because it does help eliminate a lot of the background noise and has a good clean sound for vocals. This would also work really well as an entry level studio mic set and will allow you to play around with multiple micing positions if you opt for the mic kit.

Today I am reviewing Tonor USB Tie-Clip / Desktop Microphone (SF-911B). The idea behind this microphone is awesome! A plug and play lavalier/lapel microphone that connects to any Windows or Mac computer through it's USB port. Unfortunately, only the idea of this mic is good.

The build quality of this microphone is very inconsistent. The microphone capsule is encased in metal which gives it a nice sturdy feel and some nice weight. The USB cable is a standard usb cable so there's nothing special there. On the cable a few inches below the mic is a rectangular box that I am assuming contains the circuitry for the USB interface, which I think is placed in a HORRIBLE location. The mic stand feels cheap, but offers some nice options as far as microphone positioning, and it offers some cable management on the bottom side of the stand.
The frequency response of this mic is listed as 100Hz - 16kHz which is pretty nice for a cheap USB mic. It offers decent sound for the voice, but as you would expect, it lacks a bit of presence/high-end when clipped to your shirt.
The polar pattern of this microphone is omni directional which is standard for lapel microphones. However, for a USB version of this microphone, they should consider offering a Unidirectional model to help eliminate background noise from the keyboard.
When connected to the computer, there was also a HUGE issue with digital noise. No matter what I set my gain at, I could not escape the digital noise that is reminiscent of morse code. Also, when you touch the metal microphone capsule, it seems to cause a short/grounding issue that increases the buzz even more. This could be avoided by adding the windscreen.
DO NOT BUY THIS MICROPHONE! I do not think that anyone should waste their money on this thing. The idea behind it is great, but the execution was horrible. There's a constant buzz that is only amplified if you make the mistake of touching the microphone capsule. The signal is also fairly quiet which means you will most likely have to crank your gain which will also amplify the digital noise. All around, the USB model of this mic is just not a good option for anyone.

Today I am reviewing Audio Technica AT2020USB+. This mic is not to be confused with the XLR Version (AT2020) or the prior iteration (AT2020USB). I do also want to note that this microphone is listed as compatible with Windows & Mac machines.

The build quality on this microphone feels pretty nice. It has an all metal body, a metal grill, and some substantial weight to it. On the front of the microphone there is a blue LED light to indicate when the microphone is connected to the computer and receiving sufficient power. Directly beneath this are two new dials that were non existent on the prior model. The first dial controls the mix between the microphones audio and the computers audio. This will allow you to hear 100% of the mics zero latency monitoring, 100% of the computers audio output from your DAW, or any mix in between. The second dial is a simple headphone volume control. On the back of there is a single 3.5mm headphone port that allows you to plug in your headphones.
The built in audio interface offers a 16-bit bit depth and a sampling rate of 44.1/48kHz. When I tested the noise generated by the microphone, I didn't start to hear excessive noise until I got around 60% on my computer. Everything below that seemed to be fairly workable.
The frequency response of this mic is listed as 20Hz - 20kHz and it sounded great to me. I did not notice any frequencies missing or sticking out which is always a good thing. Due to the nice response, I thought that the electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and voice all sounded very nice and full on this mic. I do want to point out that the 2020USB+ also improved it's frequency response compared to the 2020USB. The prior version only had a freq response of 20Hz - 16kHz.
The polar pattern of this microphone is cardioid, but it seems a bit wider than most other cardioid mics I tested out. It picked up my voice fairly well all around the microphone and when I typed on my keyboard it picked up quite a bit of clicking.
Overall, I think this microphone sounds great. It has a nice full frequency response and it performed very well on the acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and voice. The polar pattern is a bit wider than I would prefer and that is why I placed this in the cons section, however, this is not necessarily a bad thing. The wide polar pattern just requires you have a room that is treated (if you don't want reverb), or it means you should want some reverb in your recordings.
Because of the polar pattern, I don't think this is a good option for gamers because it will most likely pick up a lot of keyboard noise and mouse clicking. This seems to be designed for musicians who are looking to demo out music, or podcasters who do have the ability to record in a treated room.

It's a jungle out there! We need the power of all the creatures to stay safe in this month's Superhero Sunday with Animal Man.
DC's Stranges Adventures #180 (Sept, 1965) featured a story called, "I Was the Man with Animal Powers." created by Dave Wood and Carmine Infantino. The hero that appears in that book would become a semi-regular character and given the name "A-Man" (#190).
Then in the late 80's DC went through a reset of its universe after the events of "Crisis on Infinite Earths." The reset allowed many smaller, "lesser known" superheroes to be written with new fresh and often UK talent. Revival of this character was by Grant Morrison who gave a fresh and deep look into the hero that is Buddy Baker aka Animal Man.
The story would be well recieved and continue for 2 years and 26 issues. Then the title moved to Vertigo and would later reveret back to DC proper during 52 and the New 52. There was even a 2009 mini-series called,"Last Days of Animal Man." A story that saw an older Animal Man in his final moments in the year 2024.
Bernhard "Buddy" Baker as teenager encountered a extraterrestrial spaceship which endows him with the ability to communicate and use the abilities of animals (by tapping into the lifeforce known as the "Red"). This connection to the animals makes him become a vegetarian and animal activist. He learns he can tap into more than one creature at a time and he must stay connected to nature. Once he loses touch he feels he can only reach the animals nearest to him.
The story really starts when we see Buddy a bit older. He has a wife, Ellen, and 2 children, Maxine and Cliff (Following most recent New 52 version). Buddy was a stuntman turned superhero turned actor. The New 52 story shows him retired from caped heroics and focused more on being a father and animal activist. His life begins to change once he and his daughter have nightmares about a thing called the "Rot" that will destroy both "Red" and "Green" which is all life.
The journey has Animal Man fighting demon creatures created by the "Rot" and Buddy finds out his powers are apart of the "Red", which has many Avatars and Totems of life. Both Buddy and his daughter are tapped into the "Red" but Cliff his son is not. The totems warn Buddy of a dark future and he must defend earth from this grave threat. Buddy ends up road tripping across America in order to find and defeat the threat while keeping his family safe.
Animal Man has had many journeys and adventures. The best are those with his family where he feels the effects of balance between hero and family.
Buddy/Animal Man was written by some of the most talented writers (in my opinion), so I had to check him out. I was well into loving and reading a lot of other books by Jeff Lemire and was excited to see what he would do with a DC property. I really enjoy the fact that Lemire teamed up with Scott Snyder who was writing Swamp Thing at the time to form a cross over between the "Green" and "Red" in the DCU (something that wouldn't have happened if Jeff and Scott weren't already friends).
That and I love the books with the "feels," Jeff Lemire and Grant Morrison make you feel attached to this character and his family for the whole journey. Its a hero unlike any other.
Public defense attorney Freeman Faust joins us to talk about something we have all dealt with, whether we’ve thought about it or not: Social Contract. The agreements, whether explicit or implicit, define what behaviors are expected and acceptable in a group of any size. When these contracts are breached, when expectations do not line up, people tend to get upset. By talking together and clearly establishing a contract before playing, the group will hopefully be able endure for longer and keep players happier. Episode #156 of the Misdirected Mark Podcast does a good job of breaking down a gaming social contract into the logistics of getting a group together and the campaign framework, which guides the story and playstyle of the game.
For your downloading pleasure, Freeman drafted an actual social contract, containing many of the topics that your tables social contract might include that you can force your players to sign. Remember, it’s not legally binding unless you have it stamped by a notary.
The Free RPG Society: Rewind: Temporal Tales is a pay-what-you-want RPG that handles time looping stories like Groundhogs Day. It’s written primarily for one player and one GM and works very well for that. It also has suggesting for using an oracle mechanic for solo play, though I didn’t find that very satisfying. Prepare your heartstrings to be pulled in this month's Do You Even Comic with Jeff Lemire's "Sweet Tooth."
In 2009 Vertigo, a branch of DC Comics, published a book by the Canadian writer/artist, Jeff Lemire. The book was given a logline of "Mad Max meets Bambi." This is of course, Sweet Tooth I am referering too. The book ran for for 40 issues from 2009-2013.
Lemire only set out with plans for 20-30 issues, but the book became so much more. The story was influenced from other creators such as Garth Ennis (The Punisher: The End) and writer Harlan Ellison ( A boy and his dog).
Starting in the fictional post-apocalyptic future of a rural Nebraska, Sweet Tooth is a story that follows Gus and other human/animal hybrid creatures.
Gus, a young boy/deer hybrid, has humble beginnings, taking after his ill father who rambles about religion and prophecy. Gus lives within his small farm like home until his father passes and men come to capture him.
The journey Gus embarks on truly begins when the men come, luring Gus out with candy (aka sweet tooth). Jeppard, a older rugged man comes to rescue Gus from these redneck captors. Jeppard offers to take Gus to "The Sanctuary" but it is not all that it seems. Once there, Jeppard is revealed to be operating for selfish means and dumps poor Gus into the hands of a strange and cruel scientist.
Jeppard does find out what is going to happen and his conscience cannot allow poor Gus or any other hybrid beings to be hurt like this.
From here the story is an escape on the road adventure with tragedy and triumph (it's cliche to say but its true). The book is an adventure with twists and turns that tug at your heart the whole time. I wont spoil anymore but you'l. see what prophecy and science have in common with this grand story.
Why? Hmm, because I am a lover of all things Jeff Lemire. And, a book he was doing about human/animal hybrids? sign me up! I am always excited to see what Jeff Lemire will bring to each new original story he works on.
This is a man who writes emotional journeys with fantastical situations, It is both entertaining and inspiring.

Geek lawyer Ruth Carter discusses how copyright law intersects with fan art and fan fiction. Find out what you can legally do and what is likely to result in a cease and desist letter or lawsuit.
This was one amazing panel. Ruth Carter is a lawyer who comes to conventions to speak about copyright, fair use and potential of problems.
Her number one answer for problems that come up with comics and geeky cases is, " It depends." Why? Because when it comes to the law and who is at fault it really does become a case by case issue. First disclaimer: this is my recounting of the panel and all legal advice should go through the proper channels, with that being said here is what I picked up.
When it comes to COPYRIGHT you have the ability to protect and control the following:
Copyrights last for the lifetime of the author/creator plus 70 years or if its an LLC its 120 years from date of creation.
The rest of the panel dealt with Fair Use. If you are an artist who makes prints of already owned IP you might be protected under fair use or you could be walking on thin ice but with fair use of creations there is no black and white.
Ruth uses the acronym PAIN for ways to find out if you are under fair use.
For something to be considered protected under fair use it must be unique enough and transformative. By transformative I mean it has to be, lets say, an oil painting set in the victorian era of a cartoon. Something that is not in the original format of the IP. Also parody falls into fair use but satire doesn't automatically.
This was just a splash into copyright/r fair use and I highly recommend you check out the rest of Ruth Carter's work as well as contact someone for proper legal counsel if you have real concerns.

Arryn Zech is an American actress best known for her role as Blake Belladonna from RWBY. She also voices the character Dr. Emily Grey in the longest running web-based series "Red vs. Blue," created by the Austin based production company Rooster Teeth. With a background in theater and classical voice, Arryn is now based in LA pursuing her career in film and television.
I am a long time fan of Rooster Teeth Productions, this icluded everything they have done from their podcast, achievement hunters, RT Life, and ofcoarse Red vs. Blue. I am also a huge fan of voice acting, so you can imagine I was excited for this panel.
The panel started with her with a brief introduction to Arryn Zech for those who might not be aware of who she is. She also immediately acknowledge how lucky and happy she is to have the fans she does and to play such big characters. After that it went into a Q & A from both the moderator of the panel and people standing in line at a microphone.
Here are a few things that were asked and I learned about from the panel. First thing that was brought up was getting ready for the role of a character. Arryn says, you need to find a way to connect the the character your playing. Though not all characters are relateable in the traditional sense, it is important to find a thread you can connect with and you start to understand the character. You must find what makes the character true to you and believe in that, then it just gets easier with time.
The second bit of advice came from the question "What do you do to learn an accent?" Arryn says she watches youtube and recommends getting emerished in the voices, weither that is watching youtube or surround yourself in the environment of the accent. She also recommends youtube for practice anyway.
The best thing a person wanting to voice act can do is to make a reel (an audtion tape). From their its about taking acting lessons. Just because you arent seen doesnt mean you don't need to know how to act. Take classes and learn as much as you can.
I found that was the biggest reveal to me, was you need to rmember youre still acting and that a little bit of theater can help with voice acting. But it comes down to putting in the effort and taking it seriously.
