The Shrieker Podcast 004: Marissa Kelly

Marissa Kelly talks to us about Bluebeard's Bride, a horror game she’s working on with Strix Beltràn and Sarah Richardson

Bluebeard’s Bride is a game for a female protagonist, like Heroine. In it multiple players act as aspects and drives in a single protagonist’s head. This lets simplistic tropes and archetypes create a much more complicated character. The danger is that a player’s psyche can shatter is the protagonist takes too much stress. Unlike Everyone is John, the other game where multiple players are controlling a single character, the bride is very much sane in an insane world. The rooms that the protagonist passes through are filled with subtle, psychologically creepy elements. Similar toMisspent Youth, Bluebeard’s Bride allows players to face not just what the bride is most afraid of but the things that actually scare the players. This sounds very difficult but as a Powered by the Apocalypse game, Bluebeard’s Bride has a moves and other mechanical structures to help players and GM settle into the game easily.

In addition to a page on Magpie Games, Bluebeard’s Bride has a Google+ community and an account on Twitter. Open playtest materials should be available soon.

This month you can download the Generic Archetype Drive System, a modular mechanic that, when tacked onto most RPGs, allows multiple players to control one protagonist.
