First, EarBuds: The Podcasting Documentary, which I'm sure you could guess, is a documentary surrounding the podcast community. Secondly, Arrival, a sci-fi film that is a breath of fresh air amongst all the mindless stuff plaguing our screen.

Then I briefly discuss a product that I have been testing, the Go Novate bluetooth earbud before jumping into optimizing your youtube channel to acquire more subscribers and more viewers.

I cover Video Titles, Video Descriptions, Improving Videos, Thumbnails, Channel Descriptions, and Playlist creation.

A Brief History of Black Canary

Grab your earplugs and put up your fists for this month’s Superhero Sunday with DC’s Black Canary.

The History

Black Canary was created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino, Debuting in Flash Comics #86 (Aug 1947). This was the character’s start in comics but it wasn’t until 1983 when Roy Thomas had a crack at Black Canary that she became the recognizable figure we know today. Black Canary would continue to grow and become a known name and eventually move past the pages of comics and onto the television screens in the hit cartoon series Justice League, and live action show Arrow.

The Character

The original Black Canary was Dinah Drake she was a crime-fighter who infiltrated and took down gangs. At the start, she was merely a companion to Johnny Thunder but quickly become her own hero. Back in 1948-1950s Dinah, who would become the Black Canary, was a black haired florist in love with Larry Lance a GCPD Detective. She would fight crime and even join the Justice Society. Note: Comics got messy when Earth One and Earth Two crossed over providing Dinah with magic gift of “canary scream” from Aquarius (Later many things were retcon).

Let’s jump to 1983. Black Canary was revealed to be the daughter of Dinah and Larry Lance, she is Dinah Laurel Lance (during retroactive continuity). Moving forward Black Canary moved up from stopping street crime and becoming a full on member of the Justice League.

While a team member of JL she was a key member of the Birds of Prey a team that consisted of Oracle (Barbra Gordon), The Huntress, and herself. This team forms while trying to take down the Suicide Squad, and after that mission they stay together and continue to fight crime. Black Canary also popularly has a relationship with Green Arrow; for years in DC she would partner with him both romantically and for fighting for justice.

The new new new story has their lives retconned but reuniting in DC REBIRTH.

Why this hero?

It is amazing how cartoons as a child exposed me to so many characters in the superhero universe. Black Canary being one of those characters. I grew up on comics and cartoons and for DC that meant Batman the Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. Black Canary was one of those characters I enjoyed watching fight alongside Green Arrow and Batman, but never followed. Then she pops up in Young Justice (a must see DC cartoon) as the Trainer and advisor to a young team of new superheroes. I have since seen her in Arrow and read several stories and now appreciate Black Canary as a superhero who deserves your attention. She is tough, confident and can kick your butt.

Do You Even Comic: Seconds

Grab your chef apron and remember don't eat the mushrooms because its time for this months Do You Even Comic with the graphic novel Seconds.

The History

Some people I am sure have already heard of this book or heard of Bryan Lee O'Malley or you know of his work. Bryan is the man behind the cult hit comic, Scott Pilgrim vs the World. His first work was back in 2003 a graphic novel titled Lost at Sea. He has gone on to win Eisner's and man Harvey Awards. Seconds was released in 2014 and received well by readers and critics.

The Story

Seconds follows Katie a talented young chef and proud owner of her restaurant "Seconds." Things are going well for Katie at first, her restaurant is successful but small and she wants to open a second bigger and better restaurant. She is excited and full of ego about her plans for a big bright future. But like in all stories something changes her plans. The new building hits problems with construction and she sees her ex-boyfirend and the, the fling she has with the new chef goes sour and the new waitress Hazel at work seems off putting.

Now it seems things go from good to bad at at the same time, then one night while Katie is at home in bed a ghstly white girl name Lis appears and offers her a note pad with instructions and a small mushroom. The instructions allow for a do-over, some she feels she needs at the moment. She would get a chance to change things. She wants to fix things with her Ex but see isn't happy with just that ans she soon finds more mushrooms hidden under a floorboard, these magic mushrooms don't work in an exact science and Katie gets in over her head with lots of changes and weird reactions happening.

Katie has to now fix a lot more than she started with and the story continues.

Why this book?

So why this weird book about magic mushrooms and a chef full of problems? That is because Bryan Lee O'Malley makes a pretty book. This book is wonderful and fun. It feels like he was able to learn from the six volumes of Scott Pilgrim and distill his work into a tight graphic novel. This book offers heart and full characters that you like and attach yourself too, it also looks cute and fun, the colors pops with his unique art style it is a ageless book about learning to live and learn from mistakes and keep the things you love not just try to be bigger and better.

The Book

Logitech C922 Pro Webcam Review/Test

When researching camera's for your youtube channel, it can be overwhelming. There are $1,000 DSLRs, $800 Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lens systems, 20+ megapixel sensors, and hundreds more features that you will never use. Well, Logitech has made the search for your first camera much easier with their new webcam, the Logitech C922.

This camera is nearly identical to their prior high end webcam, the C920, but there are some differences. The first thing you can tell is that there is a slightly improved microphone. Secondly, you will notice a very slight improvement in sharpness. The third and most drastic change is that this thing claims to do background replacement without a green screen

If you are interested in this microphone, it will set you back $100 on Amazon

What's In the Box

  1. Webcam
  2. Desktop Tripod (if you order C922 ommitted with C922x)
  3. Three month X-Split license (Six-Month license with C922x)
  4. Documentation

Specifications

  1. 1080p 30fps
  2. 720p 60fps
  3. Background Replacement
  4. Stereo Microphone

Performance / Features

The build quality of this webcam is nearly identical to the C920. It has a standard plastic build, but it feels fairly durable. It has a mounting system that allows you to mount it on top of your monitor or laptop screen as well as a tripod mount. The desktop tripod is nothing special, it has standard expandable legs, and a ball mount so you can adjust the angle of your camera.

The image quality on this camera is great for a $100 webcam. It has slightly improved sharpness when compared to the prior C920 and can absolutely function as your primary youtube camera. When shooting at 1080p you can shoot up to 30fps which looks great. If you're doing a let's play and you plan on overlaying a facecam, you can shoot 720p up to 60fps and get really smooth video quality. But not everything on this camera is excellent.

The background replacement on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. It struggled greatly when separating me from the background even though I was very well lit. The hair seemed to cause the most problems. It was constantly trying to differentiate my hair from the background, and it never succeeded. Ultimately, the background replacement does not function as well as I was hoping for, and if you do plan on using it, I highly suggest clearing your background completely, or investing in a green screen.

Pros

  • Great image quality
  • 1080p 30fps
  • 720p 60fps

Cons

  • The microphone lacks in quality
  • The background replacement is not usable unless you have a clear background or green screen

Conclusion

Regardless of the fact that the background replacement does not perform as well as I had hoped, it is still an excellent camera. The video quality is superb at 1080p, and the fact that it can shoot 60fps at 720p will be a HUGE attractor for gamers. If you are in the market for a webcam and you have $100 to spend, I highly recommend this camera for your youtube channel/let's plays. If you are on a slightly tighter budget, I would 100% recommend the Logitech c920 which has video quality that is almost on par with the C922.

If you have any additional questions about this microphone, leave them on the youtube video, and I will try to reply ASAP.

In the news I talk about a new Tile device, the end of the best TV show on air, Halt & Catch Fire, and Amazon’s music streaming service.

To finish out the podcast, I discuss Mirage Men, a documentary focussing around the disinformation campaign waged against Paul Bennewitz and the entire UFOlogy community. Rode smartLav+ Smartphone Mic Review/Test

Today I am talking about a lavalier microphone that plugs directly into your smartphones 3.5mm jack; the Rode SmartLav+ Smartphone Lav Mic

My main concern with purchasing a 3.5mm TRRS microphone, like the smartLav+ is the potential for 3.5mm jacks disappearing from more smart phones in the future. If you are planning on upgrading to an iPhone 7 or any phone that has removed the 3.5mm jack, then this is not the microphone for you.

If you are interested in this microphone, it will set you back $80 on Amazon

What's In the Box

  1. Lav Mic
  2. Windscreen
  3. Microphone Clip
  4. Carrying Pouch
  5. Quick Start Guide

Specifications

  1. Frequency Response: 60Hz - 18kHz
  2. Polar Pattern: Omnidirecitonal
  3. Mic Sensitivity: -35dB

Performance / Features

The build quality of this mic feels pretty nice. The majority is plastic, but it has a nice reinforced joint where the cable meets the microphone, so I wouldn't be too worried about the cable shorting out. The windscreen is sufficient, and the microphone clip feels really nice, and provides a really nice option to route your mic cable to avoid unnecessary strain.

The microphone only sounded decent when it was attached to my lapel. When I placed the microphone on the center of my shirt, it sounded much clearer, but still a little dull. This could be easily remedied with a quick EQ. When comparing it to a similar lavalier microphone that is only $40, I heard almost no difference, but this could be attributed to the fact that both mics were being run through the Rode Rec app.

Pros

  • Reinforced cable joint
  • Provides wireless functionality w/ relatively low price tag
  • Nice mic clip

Cons

  • A bit expensive for sound quality achieved

Conclusion

This is only a decent microphone. It has a decent build quality but the audio quality leaves a bit to be desired. I also plan on upgrading to a new phone that has done away with the 3.5mm TRRS jack, so this mic will be obsolete if this trend continues.

I would only really recommend this if you are a Rode mic purist, or if you want a mic that plugs directly into your smartphone with no adapters needed. Other than that, I don't think it performs at a level that justifies the $80 price tag. You can pick up a microphone for half the price along with a TRRS adapter and have the same quality audio.

If you have any additional questions about this microphone, leave them on the youtube video, and I will try to reply ASAP.

A Brief History of Misty Knight!

Get out of the way men and get ready for a BA lady in this Superhero Sunday with Misty Knight!

The History

Art by Khari Evans

Art by Khari Evans

Originally created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones she first appeared in Marvel Premiere #21 (March, 1975).  History then reveals that she was actually an unnamed woman in Marvel Team-Up #64 (1972) and was save from muggers by Spider-Man

Since her creation she has always been attached to interesting titles like; Deadly Fists of Kung-Fu, Power Man and Iron Fist, Daughters of the Dragon and prominently in Heroes for Hire.

She has remained in times since her creation and now in Marvel's MCU Luke Cage show.

The Character

Misty is a former highly skilled and highly decelerated, NYPD detective, who was injured in the line of duty and lost her arm preventing a bomb attack. She resigned from the force a rather than be a desk jockey.

Tony Stark recognized her bravery and offers to provide her with a bionic arm. The arm provided her with superhuman strength. One of Misty's strongest traits is her loyalty to her friends. She saves her friend Collen Wing (also a hero) and they become a private detective team. It was known by two names "Knightwing Restoration" and daughters of the dragon (because both knew martial arts and often had to use those skills). From their Misty would team-up with Spider-Man and the X-Men then Iron Fist.

It was her private detective agency that lead her to meeting Iron Fist and Luke Cage, Misty and Colleen would end up helping Luke and Iron Fist on many cases and eventually she joined Heroes for Hire. This would go on for years and Misty even began a relationship with Iron Fist. Heroes for Hire took many street level cases but allowed to show the streets of Marvel's New York and they would stop many gangs and Hydra.

Civil War happened and shook up everything, Misty reformed and sided with registration after seeing all the heroes going unchecked on their abilities. This would put her at ends with Danny (Iron Fist) and break up Heroes for Hire. Though Iron Fist disagreed with the "Initiative" they stayed together and she even rushed to his aid with Luke Cage.

Post Civil War Misty creates her own  Heroes for Hire and provides a team of street level heroes in exchange for money and information. Then she joins a team of powerful women in the Fearless Defenders. (Things go silent for a little for Misty until All-New Marvel).

Her current Marvel status is with fighting along side Sam Wilson (Former Falcon/current Capt. America). She also appears to be in a relationship with Sam.

My hope is with the new Iron Fist show, Misty will return to Iron Fist in the comics as a bad ass Kung-Fu duo.

Why this hero?

I only knew by proxy of Iron Fist and the 2006 Civil War event story. I also read the brief run of Fearless Defenders and wanted to learn about all the super women in that title.  She sparked my interest but with on Netflix's current series Luke Cage, I had to check more of the awesome lady out.

SADES SA917 USB Stereo Gaming Headset Review / Test

Before I begin I need to mention that SADES sent me a review unit of this headset to test out for this review.

Today we are going to be looking at the updated 2016 version of the SADES SA917 USB Gaming Headset. As I'm sure you could guess from the name of this product, it is a USB gaming headset, meaning it has a single USB plug to power everything.

If you are interested in this microphone, it will set you back $33 on Amazon

What's In the Box

  1. Gaming Headset (mic & cable attached)

Specifications

Headphones

  1. Drivers: 40mm
  2. Frequency Response: 20Hz - 20kHz
  3. Sensitivity: 115 +/- 3dB at 1kHz
  4. Impedance: 32 Ohms at 1kHz
  5. Max Input Power: 15mW

Microphone

  1. Frequency Response: 50Hz - 10kHz
  2. Polar Pattern (Not Listed): Omnidirecitonal (based on test)
  3. Mic Sensitivity: -38dB +/- 3dB

Performance / Features

The build quality of this headset is decent. It is still an all plastic build, but it feels sturdier than other headsets in the same price range. The padding on the ear cups and the headband is pretty comfortable, however, it does not form a tight seal around your ears. The microphone's joint feels a little bit too loose for my liking, which makes me believe that after a decent amount of use it will not stay in the desired position.

The cable is a standard 1.5m rubber USB cable with an inline controller. The control panel has a headphone volume control, microphone mute button, and a button to switch between different EQ settings. There are 4 options: (1) Off, (2) Red, (3) Green, (4) Blue. I don't know what each of these settings is because they did not list each of them. Based on listening, Red boosts bass frequencies, Green boosts high frequencies, and Blue boosts mid frequencies.

The headphones are not the best sounding that you will find. They lack a little bit in the high end and the audio in the lower frequencies is a little loose. The sound is still better than other headsets I've tested at a similar price point.

The microphone flat out does not sound good. It is very dull sounding, almost as if you were speaking through a sheet. It lacks a LOT of high end and once you get above 50% on the gain you start to hear digital artifacts. It is also an omnidirectional microphone which means it picks up quite a bit of keyboard noise while you're gaming. You also are unable to articulate the mic to move it closer or farther away from your mouth.

Pros

  • Cheap
  • Decent headphone sound
  • USB Headset for easy setup
  • Inline Controls
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Poor microphone quality
  • Omni directional mic is not ideal for gaming

Conclusion

If you are on a tight budget and are looking for a headset that has decent audio quality from the headphones, this is a great option and I absolutely recommend it. On the other hand, if you are looking for a gaming headset that has great audio quality from the microphone, this is not the headset for you.

If you have any additional questions about this microphone, leave them on the youtube video, and I will try to reply ASAP.

It has been a great move and I look forward to meeting and connecting with tons of talented people that live here and sharing their stories with you the listeners.

i will be participating in a Grant offer called "Creators for Creators" in order to attempt to get a comic project funded and I urge other creators to submit as well.

Update I currently have my comics (Beard and Frog Issue 1) in 2 store in Portland:
