The actors and actresses of the film were required to be able to understand and explain The Matrix. Simulacra and Simulation was required reading for most of the principal cast and crew. Keanu Reeves stated that the Wachowskis had him read Simulacra and Simulation, Out of Control, and Evolutionary Psychology even before they opened up the script, and eventually he was able to explain all the philosophical nuances involved. Carrie-Anne Moss commented that she had difficulty with this process.

  • Simulacra and Simulation examine the relationships between reality, symbols, and society, in particular the significations and symbolism of culture and media involved in constructing an understanding of shared existence.

On The Subject: Of Twin Movies: White House Down v Olympus Has Fallen

What happens when the OTS Crew pits two films against each other that are so similar you could call them twins? Lets find out has we get into our first ever Twin Movie Battle AKA It Takes Two!

This episode we are comparing two 2013 films about presidents and espionage, White House Down and Olympus has fallen.

Twin films are films with the same, or very similar, plot produced or released at the same time by two different film studios.[1] The phenomenon can result from two or more[2]production companies investing in similar scripts around the same time, resulting in a race to distribute the films to audiences.[3] Some attribute twin films to industrial espionage, the movement of staff between studios, or that the same screenplays are sent to several film studios before being accepted. Another possible explanation is if the films deal with topical issues, such as volcanic eruptions, reality television, terrorist attacks or significant anniversaries, resulting in multiple discovery of the concept.[3]

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN

Disgraced Secret Service agent (and former presidential guard) Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

NOTES

  • Jake Gyllenhal almost replaced Tobey McGuire as Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2

  • The Indian version has all cuss words muted and liquor blurred

  • Peter's suitcase has the letters "BFP" on it. This refers to Benjamin Franklin Parker, Peter Parker's Uncle Ben whose death motivated him to become Spider-Man.

  • Tom Holland wanted Jason Momoa as Kraven the Hunter in the movie.

    • Who could play Kraven?

  • In the film, Spider-Man mentions Captain Marvel, which marks the first time a MCU character referred to Carol Danvers by that name.

  • According to storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson, Mysterio was supposed to be one of the villains in Sam Raimi's canceled Spider-Man 4. He was to be played by cult icon Bruce Campbell, a childhood friend and longtime collaborator of Raimi's, who had made cameos in all three Spider-Man films.

  • Peter's passport lists August 10th as his birthday. Spider-Man's first appearance was in Amazing Fantasy #15, released August 10th, 1962, in real life Tom Holland's birthday is June 1st.

  • This's the first Marvel-Avengers crossover movie without a cameo by Stan Lee, co-creator of the MCU.

  • It was reported that Matt Damon turned down the villain role.

  • While Hydro-Man is not technically in the film, Flash Thompson is researching the aquatic terror and brings up an article regarding science experiments done on a sailor named Morris Bench, who is Hydro-Man in the comics.

  • When the Elementals appear, there are various signs that refer to Spider-Man's comic history:

  • a boat sign reads "ASM212" during the water Elemental attack. The water villain Hydro-Man (Morris Bench) made his debut in "Amazing Spider-Man #212" (January 1981).

  • a car bears a license plate reading "463" during the earth Elemental attack. The earth villain Sandman (Flint Marko) made his debut in "Amazing Spider-Man #4", September 1963.

  • a car bears a license plate reading "2865 SEP" during the fire Elemental attack. The fire villain Molten Man (Mark Raxton) made his debut in "Amazing Spider-Man #28", September 1965.

  • The future of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was widely reported to be incredibly confusing following this films release. In the build up of the film and indeed the few months after its release, it was confirmed that it would be followed by The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and a Sinister Six spin-off film, with Venom and an untitled female super heroine films as well as The Amazing Spider-Man 4 also confirmed to be in the works. However, in August Sony announced that The Sinister Six would take the place of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and that the third in the trilogy would be pushed back to an unspecified date in 2018. Then, during a hack into Sony's email, it was revealed with much media coverage that Sony had approached Marvel Studios with a deal to share the rights of the franchise of which Marvel refused. During this period of time, it was also revealed that Sony wished to fire Andrew Garfield due to his speaking out of the production studio and refusal to meet them for company events. After a lengthy silence, Sony and Marvel revealed on 9 February 2015 they would work together to produce a new Spider-Man series (set in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe") and that The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was canceled.

On The Subject: Of Western Movies

Grab your saddle and settle in cause the OTS crew is talking a ride into the old west. We are discussing the history or Westerns, breaking down how they got started and how they “died”. Plus we look at our favorite and why the western has made such an impact on film.

Serial Dime Novels, Comic, Radio shows, TV and so on but we are here to talk Old West Films

Western Genre is a wide range of films that started when film started and has grown and changed as much as the film industry itself. Typically the films center around the American Frontier in the 19th Century but range from Mid 1800s thru early 1900s

Westerns are more of an American Mythology of the west with a Hero Cowboy and lawless times and the every changing new danger world

When we got talkies, the prototypical Western was Stagecoach, which featured all the things audiences of the '30s wanted – John Ford behind the camera, John Wayne in front of it, dangerous Apaches, Monument Valley backdrops and, of course, a stagecoach.

NOTES

  • The title "Parabellum" comes from the Latin phrase: "Si vis pacem, para bellum" which means "If you want peace, prepare for war." It is also an alternate name for the ubiquitous 9mm handgun cartridge ("9mm Parabellum").

  • Halle Berry broke three ribs while filming the movie

  • Keanu Reeves has stated in interviews that he does not want the franchise to be destroyed by sequels and the 'John Wick' series will most likely conclude in Chapter 3.

  • The glass-structure where John fights Shinobi 1 and Shinobi 2 in the film's climax cost $4 million to construct.

  • When Winston welcomes John to the glass penthouse he states that they only use that room for special occasions; to see what the enemy is holding under the table. This is a clear tip-off that Winston is now, indeed, John's enemy and no longer an ally.

On The Subject: Of John Wick

An ex-hit-man comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that killed his dog and took everything from him. Obviously this means we are breaking down the John Wick films and the OTS crew decided there favorite characters, moments and deaths. We also decide what doesn't work in a nearly perfect action movie!

John, is a man of focus. Commitment. Sheer will. Something you know very little about. I once saw him kill three men in a bar… with a pencil. With a fuckin' pencil. Suddenly one day he asked to leave. It was over a woman, of course. So I made a deal with him. I gave him an impossible task. A job no one could have pulled off. The bodies he buried that day laid the foundation of what we are now. And then, my son, a few days after his wife died… you steal his car, and kill his fuckin' dog.
